Why choose Plywood Sheet?

What is plywood?

Plywood is an engineered timber panel built from thin veneers glued in cross-bonded layers, which is what gives it its strength. Because the grain of each layer runs at right angles to the next, plywood is stiff, stable and strong across the whole panel, and far stronger per kilogram than MDF. It is the go-to board for shelving, structural work, jigs, flooring, cladding and any panel that has to carry load.

Grades and types we supply

We carry structural and non-structural plywood in interior and exterior grades. Structural plywood, for example F8 to AS 2269, is used where strength matters. Exterior and marine-type grades use water-resistant glue lines for wet and outdoor-exposed work. Cladding and lining plywoods give a clean face for architectural finishes, and hardwood-faced boards suit visible joinery. Tell us the job and we will match the grade, glue bond and face quality.

Thicknesses and sizes

Plywood is stocked in a wide range of thicknesses from thin bending and backing plies through to heavy structural boards, in standard 2400 x 1200 mm and 2440 x 1220 mm sheets. Thinner boards suit linings, backs and curved work; mid boards suit cabinetry and shelving; thick structural boards suit flooring, platforms and load-bearing panels. Buy full sheets or have them cut to size.

Cutting, finishing and fixing

Plywood cuts cleanly with standard woodworking tools. Support the panel and use a fine blade to reduce edge splintering on good faces. It holds screws well, including edge fixings, which is one reason it beats MDF for structural joinery. Exterior-exposed edges and faces should be sealed or coated to protect the glue line and veneers.

Plywood or MDF?

Choose plywood when you need strength, stiffness or a panel that carries load, or when edges will be screwed. Choose MDF when you want a smooth, grain-free surface for a painted or laminated finish. For visible edges and structural jobs, plywood is the pick.

Cut to size and CNC routing

Order plywood cut to size to your exact dimensions, or have it machined to your artwork with our CNC routing and laser cutting services. We cut panels, holes and profiles ready to fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between plywood and MDF?
Plywood is built from cross-bonded veneers, so it is stronger, stiffer and lighter per kilogram and holds screws better, including on edges. MDF is denser and smoother with no grain, which makes it better for painted and laminated finishes. Use plywood for strength and structure, MDF for finish.
Can plywood be used outdoors?
Only exterior and marine-type grades with water-resistant glue lines are suited to wet or outdoor-exposed work, and even then exposed edges and faces should be sealed. Interior-grade plywood is not for outdoor use.
What is structural plywood?
Structural plywood, for example F8 to AS 2269, is manufactured and graded for load-bearing use such as flooring, bracing and platforms. Tell us the load and span and we will match the right grade.
Can you cut plywood to size?
Yes. Order full sheets or have panels cut to your exact dimensions. For holes, profiles and machined shapes we CNC-rout plywood from your drawing.
Does plywood hold screws well?
Yes. Because of its cross-bonded layers, plywood holds screws well including on edges, which is why it is preferred over MDF for structural joinery. Pre-drill near edges to avoid splitting the veneers.
What thickness plywood do I need?
Thin plies suit linings, backs and curved work; mid boards suit cabinetry and shelving; thick structural boards suit flooring and load-bearing panels. Tell us the job and span and we will recommend a thickness.
