Why Use Clear Plastic Dust Covers

Dust, moisture, and accidental contact are the enemies of precision equipment, delicate instruments, and valuable display items. A well-fitted clear dust cover solves all three problems while keeping the protected object fully visible. Unlike fabric covers or opaque enclosures, transparent plastic lets you monitor equipment status, read gauges, and appreciate displayed items without removing the cover.

Clear cast acrylic and polycarbonate are the two main materials used for protective dust covers. Both offer excellent transparency, but they differ in impact resistance, UV stability, and scratch resistance. Choosing the right one depends on your environment and what you are protecting.

Clear acrylic sheet delivers 92% light transmission, which is the same as optical glass. It has excellent UV stability, resists yellowing for years, and is easy to clean with a soft cloth and mild detergent. Acrylic sheets are the preferred choice for museum display cases, retail showcases, trophy cabinets, and any application where optical clarity and a long service life are priorities.

Polycarbonate is roughly 200 times more impact-resistant than glass and 30 times stronger than acrylic. If your dust cover needs to survive knocks from tools, forklifts, or rough handling in an industrial setting, polycarbonate is the practical choice. It is also the go-to material for machine guards and safety shields where breakage is not an option. Our polycarbonate sheet range is available in clear, and in thicknesses suitable for light covers through to heavy-duty guards.

Simply cut a tube section to the required height and place it over the item. We stock tube in a range of diameters, and our cut-to-size service can trim tube lengths to your exact specification. A flat acrylic disc bonded to the top creates a fully enclosed cylindrical cover.

Flat-panel dust covers are straightforward to produce from sheet stock. We cut panels to your dimensions using laser cutting for precise shapes and clean edges, then solvent-bond them into five-sided boxes or L-shaped shields. For rounded or complex profiles, panels can be heated and bent to shape using our acrylic bending capabilities.

When you need multiple identical covers in production quantities, vacuum forming is a cost-effective manufacturing method. A heated sheet is drawn over a mould to create a seamless, one-piece cover with consistent wall thickness. Vacuum-formed covers can include flanges, mounting lips, and ventilation features moulded directly into the part.

Should I use acrylic or polycarbonate for a dust cover?
Acrylic offers better optical clarity and UV resistance, making it ideal for display covers, instrument shields, and museum cases. Polycarbonate is virtually unbreakable, so it is the better choice for industrial environments where impacts are likely, such as factory floor machinery covers or outdoor equipment.
Can you make cylindrical dust covers from tube stock?
Yes. We stock clear acrylic tube and polycarbonate tube in a range of diameters. These can be cut to length for cylindrical dust covers over instruments, sensors, collectibles, or lab equipment. We can also add a flat acrylic cap on top if a sealed enclosure is needed.
Will acrylic dust covers yellow in sunlight?
Cast acrylic (Perspex) has built-in UV stabilisers and resists yellowing for many years, even under prolonged sun exposure. Extruded acrylic and some polycarbonate grades can yellow faster, so we recommend specifying cast acrylic or UV-stabilised polycarbonate for outdoor or sun-exposed applications.

What is the maximum size you can cut for a dust cover panel?
