Why Polycarbonate Is Australia's Go-To Roofing Sheet

Polycarbonate sheet has become the standard material for translucent roofing across Australia because it combines high light transmission with the toughness to survive hail, falling branches, and the UV intensity of the Australian climate. It is virtually unbreakable (roughly 200 times the impact resistance of glass) and handles the temperature extremes from sub-zero alpine winters to 50-degree rooftop heat without cracking or warping.

For DIY builders and renovators, polycarbonate is significantly easier and safer to handle on a roof than glass panels, being lighter per square metre and not at risk of shattering during installation or if dropped.

Solid Sheet vs Multiwall for Roofing

Solid polycarbonate sheet in 3-6mm thickness is the most common choice for patio and pergola roofing, offering excellent clarity and a clean, glass-like appearance overhead. It is the right pick when maximum light transmission and visual appeal matter more than thermal insulation.

Multiwall (twinwall) polycarbonate has an internal fluted structure that provides better thermal insulation and light diffusion, making it suited to enclosed or semi-enclosed structures like sunrooms, covered decks, and greenhouse roofs where heat control matters.

Clear, Opal, and Tinted Roofing Options

Clear polycarbonate gives maximum light and the closest look to glass. Opal (light-diffusing) sheet softens direct sunlight into an even glow underneath the roof, reducing glare and hot spots while still keeping the space bright: a popular choice for entertaining areas where harsh overhead sun is uncomfortable.

Tinted polycarbonate in grey or bronze reduces both light and heat transmission, suiting west-facing structures or locations where afternoon sun is intense. The tint also reduces visibility of dust, leaf litter, and water marks on the sheet surface between cleans.

Purlin Spacing and Installation Considerations

Correct purlin spacing is critical for polycarbonate roofing. Too wide and the sheet deflects under its own weight, ponding water and eventually sagging permanently. As a guide, 3mm solid sheet typically needs purlins at 600-700mm centres, while 6mm sheet can span up to 1000mm. Always check the manufacturer's span tables for the specific sheet thickness and expected wind and snow loads at your location.

Sheets should be fixed with purpose-made polycarbonate roofing screws with rubber sealing washers, and pre-drilled holes should be slightly oversized to allow for thermal expansion. The UV-protected face must always face upward.

Cut-to-Size Roofing Sheets

We cut polycarbonate roofing sheets to your exact length on our CNC router, so sheets arrive ready to install with no site cutting, no dust, and no wasted offcuts. This is especially useful for awkward roof shapes, hip ends, and angled cuts that are difficult to achieve cleanly with handheld tools on site.

Provide your rafter lengths, roof pitch, and preferred finish, and we will quote sheets cut to size and ready to fix.
