Convert Your Pergola Into an All-Weather Outdoor Room
An open pergola provides shade and defines the outdoor space, but the moment it rains the area becomes unusable. Adding polycarbonate roofing sheets to the existing rafter structure converts the pergola into a weatherproof outdoor living space without losing the light, airflow, or open feel that made a pergola the right choice in the first place.
Unlike a solid Colorbond roof, polycarbonate keeps the area bright and allows climbing plants and garden beds underneath the structure to continue receiving natural light. The result is an outdoor room that works in rain or shine.
Working With Existing Pergola Structures
Most pergolas are built with rafters spaced between 600mm and 1200mm apart, which suits polycarbonate sheet installation well. Solid polycarbonate in 4-6mm thickness typically spans 600-1000mm between supports, so existing rafter spacing may already be suitable without modification.
Where rafter spacing is wider than the sheet can comfortably span, adding intermediate purlins across the existing rafters brings the support spacing within range without rebuilding the pergola frame.
Light, Shade, and Heat Management
The choice between clear, opal, and tinted polycarbonate directly affects how the space feels underneath. Clear sheet gives maximum light and sky views but can create uncomfortable heat on summer afternoons. Opal (diffusing) sheet is the most versatile choice for pergola roofing, softening direct sun into even, comfortable light while still keeping the area bright and airy.
For pergolas oriented toward the afternoon sun, tinted polycarbonate in grey or bronze cuts heat and glare significantly. Mixing clear and tinted panels across the same pergola is also an option, using tinted on the sun-facing side and clear on the shaded side.
Guttering and Water Management
Adding a roof to a pergola means managing the rainwater that previously fell through the structure. A simple gutter along the low edge of the roof, connected to a downpipe, directs water away from the entertaining area and into the garden or stormwater system. Without guttering, water sheets off the roof edge and creates a wet zone alongside the pergola.
Sheet overlap joints should run with the roof fall, and any side-by-side joints should be sealed or flashed to prevent dripping between panels in heavy rain.
Order Pergola Roofing Cut to Your Rafter Lengths
We cut polycarbonate sheets to your exact rafter length on our CNC router, so every panel fits perfectly with no site cutting. Provide your rafter spacing, lengths, and preferred finish, and we will recommend a thickness and quote sheets ready to fix.
For pergola builds with angled or raked sections, we can cut panels to the exact angles needed, saving the difficult and dust-producing on-site cuts that polycarbonate generates with handheld tools.
