Sheaves and Pulleys That Are Kind to Ropes

Steel sheaves chew through ropes and cables; plastic sheaves do not. Machined from cast nylon or UHMWPE, a plastic sheave carries the same line loads at a seventh of the weight, never rusts, runs quietly, and measurably extends rope and cable life. That is why cranes, winches, boats, and stage rigging have been converting from steel for decades.

Machined to Your Rope, Shaft, and Load

Every sheave is machined on the CNC lathe to your specification: outside diameter, groove profile matched to rope or cable size, and a plain bore, bronze bush, or bearing seat as your assembly requires. Keyways, circlip grooves, and flange details are all standard work. Send a drawing, or send the worn sheave and we will copy it.

Marine, Crane, and Rigging Applications

Boat builders and riggers use nylon sheaves for halyards, davits, and anchor systems because they shrug off salt water that seizes steel blocks. Crane and winch maintenance teams fit cast nylon sheaves to cut boom weight and extend expensive wire rope life. Stage and event rigging favours them for quiet running. The same machining serves them all.

Cable Rollers and Guide Wheels

Beyond classic sheaves, we machine cable rollers for electrical and comms installation, guide wheels for gates and sliding doors, track rollers for materials handling, and conveyor rollers in UHMWPE for abrasive product lines. Profiles can be flat, crowned, V-grooved, or U-grooved to suit what runs over them.

Material Selection for Sheaves

Cast nylon is the standard sheave material for load capacity and toughness. Oil-filled nylon adds self-lubrication for sheaves that run continuously on plain bushes. UHMWPE suits wet, gritty, and chemical environments where its slickness and inertness win. Acetal serves small precision pulleys where dimensional stability matters most.

Replacing Worn or Obsolete Sheaves

Most sheave orders start with a worn part and no drawing. Post it to us: we measure the groove, bore, and profile, correct for wear, and machine the replacement. The program stays on file against your account, turning a breakdown headache into a routine reorder.

Single Sheaves to Production Sets

We machine one-off replacements with fast turnaround and production sets for OEMs building winches, davits, and handling equipment, with consistent tolerances across the batch and volume pricing that rewards the production run.

If your sheave drawing calls up Ertalon or cast nylon MC901 by name, the trade names cross-reference shows exactly what we supply against it.

Get a quote for sheaves, pulleys, and rollers. Send the rope size, load, and shaft details, or the worn part itself, and we will price it same day.

Plastic Sheaves, Pulleys & Rollers FAQ

What is a sheave?
A sheave is the grooved wheel inside a pulley block that a rope, cable, or belt runs over. The groove profile matches the rope or cable diameter so it carries the load without pinching or abrading it. Sheave and pulley are often used interchangeably, though strictly the pulley is the whole assembly.
Why use nylon sheaves instead of steel?
Nylon sheaves are around one-seventh the weight of steel, never rust, run quietly, and are far kinder to ropes and cables, which extends rope life significantly. They also run on plain bushes without lubrication in many applications, removing a maintenance task entirely.
How much load can a plastic sheave carry?
Cast nylon sheaves routinely carry multi-tonne line loads in crane, winch, and marine service. Capacity depends on diameter, groove profile, bearing arrangement, and speed. Send us the rope size and working load and we will size the sheave and pick the right material grade.
Can you machine sheaves to match an existing pulley?
Yes. Send the worn sheave or the shaft and rope dimensions and we will machine a replacement, including the bore, keyway, or bearing seat. Programs are kept on file so replacements become routine reorders.
What about rollers and guide wheels?
Same materials, same machining. We make cable rollers, guide wheels, conveyor rollers, and track wheels from nylon, UHMWPE, and acetal, flat or profiled, with plain bores, bushes, or bearing seats to suit your assembly.
