Acrylic Balustrades. The Lightweight Glass Alternative
Glass balustrades look impressive but come with significant weight, cost, and handling challenges. Clear acrylic sheet delivers a similar transparent look at roughly half the weight, a fraction of the cost, and with far less risk during handling and installation. Unlike toughened glass, acrylic will not explode into fragments if struck. It cracks cleanly or, in the case of polycarbonate sheet, barely marks at all.
For residential decks, mezzanines, internal staircases, and garden retaining walls, acrylic and polycarbonate balustrade panels provide a clear, unobstructed view at a price point and weight class that makes them practical for DIY installation.
Acrylic vs Polycarbonate for Balustrade Panels
Clear acrylic sheet in 10-12mm thickness gives the closest visual match to glass: optically clear, with a hard, glossy surface and polished edges that catch the light. It is the right choice for residential balustrades in low-traffic, sheltered locations where the panel's role is primarily visual.
Polycarbonate sheet in 8-10mm thickness is recommended for elevated decks, commercial stairs, and any balustrade that will receive regular physical contact. Polycarbonate is virtually unbreakable and flexes under impact rather than cracking, giving a significant safety margin in high-traffic or elevated settings.
Deck and Staircase Balustrade Panels
Deck balustrades are one of the most popular applications for acrylic and polycarbonate panels. A clear panel between deck posts preserves the view from the deck, whether that is a garden, a bushland setting, or a coastal panorama, while meeting the barrier requirements for elevated decks.
For internal staircases, clear or frosted panels set between stair posts give a contemporary, open feel compared to traditional timber or metal balusters. Frosted panels provide visual screening between floors while maintaining the light, open quality of a glass-look staircase.
Building Code and Compliance Considerations
Balustrade panels in Australia are subject to building code requirements for barrier loads, gap dimensions, and height. While acrylic and polycarbonate panels are suitable for many balustrade applications, toughened safety glass may be specified by the building code or certifier for certain structural or high-risk locations.
We supply panels cut to your specified dimensions and thickness, but compliance assessment and certification is the responsibility of the building designer, certifier, or installer. We can advise on material properties to support this process.
Order Balustrade Panels Cut to Size
Every balustrade panel is cut to your exact post spacing and height on our CNC router, with edges polished for a frameless glass-look finish or left raw for panels that will sit inside a channel or frame. Mounting holes are drilled to match your post hardware.
Provide your post spacing, panel height, and mounting method, and we will recommend a material and thickness and quote panels ready to install.
