Engineering Plastics for Bearings, Rollers and Sliding Components

Bearings, rollers, bushes and slide plates take constant friction, load and often washdown or dust exposure that would chew through unprotected metal-on-metal contact. Engineering plastics solve this by running dry or near-dry, resisting corrosion, and shrugging off the grit that ruins conventional bronze or steel bushings in mining, food processing and general manufacturing plant.

At Perspex Online we cut nylon, acetal (POM), UHMWPE and Nylatron rod to length or machine it to finished bearing and roller blanks, so maintenance crews and OEMs get parts sized to the job rather than the nearest off-the-shelf metric size.

Choosing the Right Material: Nylon, Acetal, UHMWPE and Nylatron

Cast nylon (PA6) rod is the workhorse choice for general bearings and bushes — good toughness, reasonable wear life and the lowest cost per kilo of the engineering plastics. Oil-filled nylon (often sold as LFX or similar) goes a step further, releasing internal lubricant under load to cut friction and extend service life in unlubricated running gear.

Acetal (POM-C) machines to tighter tolerances than nylon, holds dimension better under load, and has lower moisture absorption — the right pick where dimensional stability matters, such as precision rollers, cams and gear blanks.

UHMWPE offers the best abrasion resistance of the group and a very low coefficient of friction, making it the standard for slide plates, chute liners and wear pads under sliding rather than rotating load. Nylatron (MoS2-filled nylon) sits between standard nylon and acetal for load-bearing rotating applications, with better wear resistance and lower friction than plain nylon rod.

Wear Resistance and Load Capacity

Correct sizing is what actually determines service life. As a rough guide, PV (pressure-velocity) limits vary from roughly 0.03 MPa·m/s for standard nylon bushes under continuous dry running up to several times that for oil-filled grades — we can talk through loading with you before you commit to a material.

All four materials handle intermittent shock loading well versus brittle plastics, and none will seize or gall the way unlubricated metal bearings do, which matters most in washdown or outdoor plant where grease attracts contamination.

Common Industrial Applications

Typical jobs we cut and machine include conveyor idler bushes, gate and door roller wheels, pump and gearbox bushings, cam followers, wear pads for sliding machine tables, and custom rollers for packaging and print lines.

We also supply trade and maintenance workshops with rod stock in bulk lengths for in-house lathe work, alongside finished-to-print components for one-off breakdown repairs.

Machining, Tolerances and Turnaround

We turn rod on our own CNC lathes to your print or sample part, holding tolerances suited to press-fit and running-clearance requirements. Send a drawing, a sketch with key dimensions, or the worn part itself and we'll quote a replacement.

Standard turnaround on machined bearing and roller blanks is typically 3-5 business days, with rush options available for breakdown situations — call us if a machine is down.
