Why Caravan Windows Need Replacing
Caravan and camper trailer windows spend their working life baking in direct sun, flexing with the van as it travels corrugated roads, and copping the odd stone chip on the highway. The most common failure signs are yellowing and clouding of the pane, crazing (fine spider-web cracking) around the edges and fixing points, and outright cracks from impact or age-related brittleness.
Because caravan windows are almost always a fixed size specific to the van model, and manufacturers don't always keep spare panes in stock for older models, cut-to-size replacement is usually the fastest and most cost-effective fix — whether that's a full window pane, a hatch or skylight, or a smaller fixed light.
Choosing the Right Material for Caravan Windows
Acrylic (Perspex) is the most common choice for caravan window replacement because it offers excellent optical clarity, good UV stability, and is lighter than glass, which matters for a vehicle where every kilogram affects towing and fuel economy. It's well suited to fixed side windows, hatches, and roof lights where scratch resistance and long-term clarity are the priority.
Polycarbonate sheet is worth considering where impact resistance matters more, such as lower side windows more exposed to stone chips, or windows in off-road and remote-touring vans that see rougher conditions. It's significantly tougher than acrylic and glass, though a UV-stabilised grade is recommended to minimise long-term yellowing in constant sun exposure.
PETG sheet is a good option for curved or slightly domed hatch and skylight covers, since it can be formed into gentle curves without the stress-whitening that cold-forming acrylic can sometimes show.
Sizing and Thickness Guidance for Caravan Glazing
Most caravan window panes are cut from 3-5mm acrylic or polycarbonate, with larger panoramic windows or panels in high-flex areas sometimes going up to 6mm for extra rigidity. Roof hatches and skylights are commonly 3-4mm, matching the original moulded surround.
The most reliable way to get an exact fit is to remove the old pane (even if cracked) and use it as a template, tracing the outline and marking all fastener or clip positions before it's discarded. If the window is glued into a rubber seal, measure the seal's internal channel dimensions instead, and send us those measurements along with the pane thickness.
Installing Your New Caravan Windows
Most caravan windows sit in a rubber seal or are held by a plastic frame with screws through a rubber-lined channel — in both cases, avoid over-tightening fasteners directly onto the plastic pane, and make sure holes are slightly oversized to allow for thermal expansion as the van heats up in the sun.
If your window design uses a bonded seal rather than a mechanical fixing, a purpose-made acrylic bonding adhesive such as Acrifix 192 will give a strong, weatherproof joint between the pane and its surround — just make sure surfaces are clean and dry and the adhesive is fully cured before the van is back on the road.
